The 2009 contest attracted nominations from a wide cross-section of businesses, including restaurants, hotels and several theatres. Ten finalists were selected based on exceptional hygiene, style and open access to the public.

WINDMILL: Trip to Branson reminds us how great the U.S. is

Following last year’s five-day trip to this mecca of country music, about 90 folks from throughout Central and West Texas joined Tracy Pitcox of Brady and members of the Heart of Texas Country Music Association last week for an encore.

Our tour group was treated to more than a dozen country music concerts or variety performances, including Jim Stafford, Moe Bandy, Buck Trent, Barbara Fairchild, Shoji Tabuchi, Yakov Smirnoff, Pretty Miss Norma Jean, the Rankin Brothers, Alan Edwards, Odessa native Ricky Boen and Texas Mud, and Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede pageant.

Dashing to the shows in Branson Missouri

Last fall, a group from Eastwood's New Horizons Club journeyed to Branson, Mo., the live entertainment capital of the world.

There are 52 state-of-the-art theaters with more than 100 different shows appealing to all ages, with music from nearly every era and style performed by rising young entertainers and legendary stars.

Beginning the first week of November, when we were there, and running through Christmas, the shows devote at least half of each performance to holiday-themed music, sets, costumes and production numbers.

Neal McCoy in Branson: Enjoying the small stage

Neal McCoy loves to have fun, and more importantly, he likes his audiences to have fun. Now that he is performing in Branson again, he gets to have a different type of fun.

“When we play festivals and fairs, places like that, it is high intensity, high energy,” McCoy said. “Here, we keep the energy level high, but I get to sing again and do some music we don’t normally get to do.”

There are several differences between McCoy’s regular concerts and his Branson show. He brought in a new band for his tenure in Branson.

“I brought this group in so we could do ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘Straighten Up and Fly Right,’” McCoy said. “People in town appreciate the variety. Plus, playing festivals and other places, we don’t get to do that a lot.”

Another thing McCoy doesn’t have is a set list.

“You will never see the same show twice because I have never done the same show twice,” McCoy said.

Live Music Shows are Branson's entertainment heart

Who could have known back in 1959 that when the Mabe family started performing their country music variety show called the “Baldknobbers,” in a small 50 seat basement room in the Branson Community Center, the show would still be going 50 years later? Who would have thought that not only would the Baldknobbers be around 50 years later, but that that there would be another 99 or so shows of every type and description also entertaining millions of Branson guests?

If, in 1959, someone had said, “50 years from now people will be coming from all over the world to see live music shows in Branson” they would have been laughed at. Well, no one’s laughing now.

Oh sure, the millions of visitors coming to Branson come to see more than shows. They come to see the natural wonder of the Ozark Mountains, play or fish in one of our three lakes, go to Silver Dollar City to one of Branson’s many other attractions, shop or participate in the myriad of activities and things there is to see and do in and around Branson. But, let there be no doubt about it, the very heart beat of Branson’s entertainment heart started with the first beat of music from the Baldknobbers show 50 years ago.

To an Ole Seagull, Branson’s entertainment heart is its music shows, particularly its family music shows and the values they represent. It is that heart that pumped the entertainment blood that enabled Branson to grow from one show entertaining a few fishermen a couple of nights a week in downtown Branson into the varied entertainment Mecca, entertaining about 7.5 million guests per year, it has become.

(BRANSON, Mo.) – For those who have difficulty making a decision when all the choices seem good, Branson is becoming increasingly complicated.

But the mid-America entertainment hot spot is heaven for those who delight in having lots of options, including music, comedy, big production-style theater and a wholesome good time.
